The Boon Hiker Band

  • Peacetown USA P.O. Box 1218 Sebastopol, CA, 95473 United States (map)

The Boon Hiker Band performs original material as well as covers of traditional Folk/Americana/Indie music, featuring guitars, bass, banjo, dobro, accordion, and percussion. They also sing in stellar, multi-layered harmonies. The eight members of the Boon Hiker Band are united by their common bond to Bay Area composer/guitarist Bill Horvitz, who shared music with these friends over 20 years at the Strawberry Music Festival and similar outdoor settings, where round-the-clock playing is known to abide. With everyone circled ‘round beneath tall trees, a hot sun, or a night full of stars…clouds, rain, snow, Bill was the one who never wanted to sleep, always called out for one more song, who steadily encouraged each person to try out something new. He held a similar passion for hiking in the mountains, so the band name is in reference to this part of him. Bill died of pancreatic cancer in January of 2017. Later that year, the Boon Hiker Band came to be during a 4-day music festival. All eight Boons sing. Their original songs and occasional covers are infused with harmonies that are beautifully considered and delivered. The added instrumentation is solid, varied, chewy, and includes combinations of guitar, bass, keyboard, banjo, accordion, dobro, lap steel, with a hint of percussion and a nose of sage. Camaraderie shines through as these Bay Area favorites share meaningful, narrative, original songs and covers, that will help kick some irksome stones off to the side of the be-deviled road of life we have all been navigating the past few years.
